Experience
It all started with writing, a skill that didn’t reveal itself until college. That core skill brought me to my first job in public relations, at SeaWorld in Ohio, at a time when penguins were the newest and coolest thing to explore. It’s also where I completed my first media tour — with penguins in tow — and learned the meaning of the word “schlepping.” With SeaWorld the theme, my career included being the advance publicity person for the SeaWorld/HBJ blimp which included some high-flying adventures across the entire USA. Most notably the day we awaited the ship’s landing in Yuma, Arizona in August, and my shoes melted into the pavement.
This landed me at SeaWorld of Texas as part of the opening team for the world’s largest theme park. It was then, and remains to this day, the biggest project of my life. But the skies were calling, so off to Florida I went to manage Airship Shamu, another cross country adventure. In one year, I attended the Super Bowl, the Daytona 500, the World Series and so many other sporting events, I cannot remember them all. Ten years later, SeaWorld came calling again –this time as communications director of the Texas park. In between, I wrote and edited more than 200 articles on travel and the arts from my home in Canberra, Australia and met some amazing artists along the way. Oh, and a quick trip to Rackspace to check out the landscape in the tech industry.
In a nutshell, I’ve launched coasters and promoted whales, dolphins and penguins; produced live shots in radio and on television; prepped executives and spokespersons for all types of public speaking opportunities; created and launched the first social media initiative ever at a SeaWorld park and created communication pieces for every kind of stakeholder imaginable.
